Mid-South Union Leadership Institute

This year's MidSouth Union Leadership Institute was attended by 36 delegates from 13 international unions, and one intern for the Arkansas Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice. Local unions represented included:

  • AFSCME 994 and 1180 (state, county and municipal workers)
  • BMWED 1058 (maintenance of way –railroad)
  • IAM 298 (machinists) IAFF 2041 (firefighters)
  • OPEIU 105 (office and professional employees)
  • TWU 514 (transportation workers)
  • UA 155 (plumbers) UBC 429 (carpenters)
  • USW 434, 752, 833, 2741, 9121, 9448 (steelworkers)
  • UTU 756 (transportation)
  • UNITE Here 1022 and 2761

State caucuses were led by Alan Hughes, President, AR AFL-CIO, and Jim Curry, President, OK AFL-CIO. Workshops and general sessions were taught by Tom Karson, Randy Wright, and Marquita Walker, staff of UALR’s Labor Education Program.

The Institute ended with a hard fought, mock union election that showcased the information and skills learned at the conference.
